PURPOSE

P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm;   P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; } of this study was to evaluate the capabilities of sonoelastography to monitor neoadjuvant chemotherapy of breast cancer and to determine correlation between reduction stiffness of cancer and grade of pathology response.

METHOD AND MATERIALS

P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; } Compression sonoelastography was performed after the conventional sonography. The elasticity image was evaluated by using the scoring system described by Itoh et al. and for all lesions the Strain-Ratio (StR) was calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using the "Statistics" 6.1. A total of 36 women were included in the group. The measurement of maximum diameter and stiffness values of breast cancer were calculated three times: before treatment, after 2 cycles of chemotherapy and after finishing the treatment. The response of breast cancers to neoadjuvant chemotherapy was evaluated by using the histological grading system discibed by I.D. Miller.

RESULTS

After 2 cycles of chemotherapy it was noticed that the reducing the sonoelastography StR were more significant than the reducing size of tumor (р < 0,001). It was found that after 2 cycles of chemotherapy if stiffness of cancer reduced to elasticity score of 2 and the StR were less than cut off value of 4,0, then the 5th grade of pathology response can be expected. On the contrary, if the value of StR in the second measurement was not changed or reduced to values exceeding the 4,0, then the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade of pathology response can be expected.

CONCLUSION

P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; Compression sonoelastography can be used to monitor the neoadjuvant chemotherapy of breast cancer. There was a significant correlation between pathological response and reducing sonoelastography stiffness of the tumor (р < 0,001).
