PURPOSE/AIM

Disorders of sex development (DSDs) are congenital conditions characterized by a discordance between the chromosomal sex, the gonadic sex and the phenotype. Imaging plays an important role in demonstrating the anatomy and associated anomalies. The diagnostic approach of these pathologies is based on ultrasonography, genitogram, retrograde urethrography and cystoscopy. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the need to integrate Magnetic Resonance (MRI) into surgical planning.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

Comparison between Magnetic Resonance, abdominal and pelvic ultrasonography, cystoscopy, retrograde urethrography and genitogram in the evaluation of children with ambiguous genitalia; previous karyotype evaluation, hormonal examinations and virilization definition (according to Prader classification). These techniques are crucial in evaluating the presence of residual müllerian tissues (uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina), gonads (testes, ovaries, ovotestis and gonadal streaks), uro-genital sinus, adrenal glands and corpora cavernosa.

SUMMARY

Comparison between data obtained from MRI and echotomography, genitogram, cystoscopy and urethrography, to gain a better understanding of which modality offers more precision for surgical planning.
