PURPOSE/AIM

The purpose of this exhibit is: 1. To raise the radiologists awareness about tularemia which is a biologic weapon. 2. To illustrate MRI and DWI findings with different cases. 3. To discuss the utility of MRI in differential diagnosis of oropharyngeal tularemia

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

Incidence and potential as a biological weapon Clinical manifestations Imaging findings with sample cases                     – Conventional MRI                     – Diffusion weighted imaging Strength and weaknesses of MRI in differential diagnosis

SUMMARY

The major teaching points of this exhibit are: 1. Oropharyngeal tularemia mostly presents with unilateral lymphoid tissue involvement 2. A progression from homogenous enhancement to development of central necrosis and peripheral enhancement of lymph nodes is present in the early and late phases of the disease 3. Accompanying increased signal intensity and contrast enhancement of neighboring soft tissue planes 4. Decreased diffusion and an ADC ranging between 1.05- 0.50mm/sn2 in lymphadenopaties.
