To illustrate the radiologic findings (mammogram, US and MR) in normal anatomy and breast lesions involving the areola-nipple area, providing clinical images and pathologic correlation
To emphasize pitfalls, diagnostic difficulties and differential diagnosis
To discuss the appropriate management of those lesions
We present a pictorial essay of the areola-nipple area, including clinical and imaging findings. We illustrate among other entities :
-Normal anatomy
-Size:Hipoplasia; Number:Accesory nipple; Morphology:umbilicated, inversion
-Skin lesions:calcification, epidermal inclusion cyst, malignant:Paget´s disease
-Duct ectasia
.Inflammatory lesions: galactophoritis, abscess
-Nipple Tumors: Adenoma, Papilloma
-Breast tumors: apocrine carcinoma, infiltrating and non-infiltrating carcinoma
The main teaching points of the exhibit are:
To be familiar with the broad spectrum of clinical and imaging findings in a heterogeneous group of lesions appearing in the areola-nipple area of the breast, most of them clinically striking
To learn the special management required for characterization of those lesions
