PURPOSE

Microsimulation models synthesize available information about disease processes and interventions, including results from randomized controlled trials, observational and epidemiologic studies, and expert opinion. This synthesis is the product of a structured model, which itself incorporates expert opinion. In this presentation, I will review basics of microsimulation models with a focus on methods for their evaluation and assessment, including comparative modeling efforts supported by the National Cancer Institute. I will also point toward efforts to improve model assessment, touching on technological advances and actions that radiologist-researches can make to improve models. These ideas will be demonstrated using a model for colorectal cancer that was used in a recent USPSTF analysis of CT colonograpy.
