LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1) To describe the types/levels of evidence used to show benefit from breast cancer screening. 2) To discuss the validity of results from randomized clinical trials and service screening studies for mammography. 3) To understand potential adverse consequences from screening including screening recalls, radiation risk, psychologic effects, false positive biopsies, and detection of low grade and in situ cancers as well as benefit/risk and benefit/cost issues. 4) To appreciate the basis for current and future screening guidelines regarding ages to begin and end screening, screening frequency, and selection of screening modalities according to patient age and risk status.
