To evaluate the cost and economic effectiveness of the digital radiology department(DRD) in three years. To learn how to cover the cost by means of saving operation cost, promoting efficiency and productivity.

According to the operation statistics in DRD from 2000 to 2002, efficiency of modality, workflow and productivity were analyzed and compared with the traditional film-based pattern in 1999. The total cost of PACS/RIS and digital imaging modalities in the period were also analyzed. Comparing with the traditional mode, efficiency of single X-ray imaging modality was promoted almost 100% (1.5±0.2:3.1±0.2min) for chest film and 98% for extremity/spine film (2.3±0.2:4.5±0.5min). The average work flow time of X-ray study (from starting exam to ending the report) in 328 cases was 34.2min, only 36.8% of the traditional mode. The annual productivity of single imaging modality was increased 6.1% in X-ray film, 29.8% in CT and 25.9% in MR. The general productivity of the whole department was increased 21.1%. Ninety percents of the total DRD costs including permanent assets and operating cost were balanced by decreasing film consumption and increasing efficiency during the period of three years.
