TEACHING POINTS1. Review BIRADS 5th edition calcification descriptors, distributions, and classifications, including specific cases in which calcifications can be called probably benign. 2. Discuss literature review regarding the probability of malignancy and prognosis for each calcification morphology. 3. Assess knowledge with a self-paced quiz including 6 cases and radiology-pathology correlation.
TABLE OF CONTENTS/OUTLINE1. Calcification morphology a) Graphic showing typically benign and suspicious morphologies b) Probability of malignancy for suspicious morphologies from the literature c) Relationship between calcification morphology and prognosis from the literature 2. Calcification distribution a) Definitions and imaging examples of distribution b) Degree of association with malignancy for each distribution 3. A comment on interreader variability 4. BIRADS classifications a) BIRADS 3: guidelines and examples of probably benign calcifications b) BIRADS 4A, 4B, 4C, and 5: likelihood of malignancy 5.
