TEACHING POINTS

To demonstrate step-by-step how to perform contrast enhanced Voiding Urosonography (ceVUS) with intravesical administration of an US contrast agent for diagnosis of vesicoureteric reflux in children.

TABLE OF CONTENTS/OUTLINE

Procedure: A. Preparation of the US contrast agent: 1. Resuspend the US contrast agent. 2. Check for a homogeneous suspension. B. US contrast agent dose for intravesical use: 1. Calculation of expected bladder capacity for age:       <1 year → child’s weight (kg) x 7       1-18 years → [age (years) +2] x 30 2. 0.5% volume of US contrast agent per bladder filling as an infusion in normal saline solution. C. Child preparation for ceVUS examination: 1. Supine positioning of child on the examination bed. 2. Bladder catheterization under aseptic conditions and connection with the US contrast-saline solution. D. ceVUS technical equipment: 1. US equipped with contrast-specific software with low mechanical index and multiple imaging options. 2. Child size appropriate multi-frequency convex and linear transducers.   E. ceVUS procedure: US of the bladder, ureters, kidneys before and after intravesical contrast administration plus transperineal US of the urethra post-contrast.
