1. Review of the anatomy and function of Achilles tendon, the largest and strongest tendon in the body; in particular the insertional component.
2. Discussion of the aetiologies of insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT), a common cause of chronic pain and reduced function in both athletes and sedentary individuals
3. Outline of the diagnosis and assessment of IAT using ultrasound and MRI
4. Review of the differences in rehabilitation programmes between Achilles tendinopathy and IAT
5. Review of the established and innovative image-guided therapies for IAT available when conservative management is unsuccessful.
1. Detailed anatomy of the Achilles tendon insertion and biomechanics
2. Clinical presentation of insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) and correlation with pathophysiology
3. Ultrasound features of IAT including power Doppler
4. MRI findings and evaluation of severity of tendinopathy in IAT
5. Differential diagnoses of IAT and how imaging can distinguish between them
6. US guided therapeutic strategies for IAT
7. High volume image guided injection – a novel interventional approach.
8. Role of prolotherapy in IAT
9. Shockwave Treatment as an alternative or in conjunction with intervention
10. Post-injection rehabilitation protocols – differences between Achilles tendinopathy and IAT
