TEACHING POINTS

Diffusion-weighted MRI has become an indispensable sequence for neuroimaging and is now in widespread use. Although principally used in the evaluation of ischemic injury, other pathologies, including neoplasms, infections, and inflammatory causes, also exhibit characteristic patterns on diffusion. Additionally, new applications including fiber tractography and ADC histogram analysis are now increasingly used clinically. To better utilize diffusion imaging, radiologists must be familiar with the fundamental principles and concepts behind the imaging technique and its limitations or potential pitfalls. The purpose of this exhibit is to provide 1) a systematic review of the physics behind diffusion imaging 2) an introduction to advanced techniques 3) a case-based review of lesions with restricted diffusion and their differential diagnosis.
