To review the causes and manifestations of various artifacts in coronary CT angiography (CCTA), categorized into patient, CT equipment, and other factors.
To illustrate novel techniques and approaches for reducing these artifacts in CCTA.
To demonstrate the usefulness of these techniques and approaches for reducing these artifacts by presenting clinical cases.
1) The causes and manifestations of various artifacts in CCTA
A. Causes
a. Patient factors
1. Arrhythmia
2. Heart rate variability
3. Severe calcification
4. Breath-hold failure (poor breath-hold)
5. Body motion
6. Coronary stent
b. CT equipment factors
1. Temporal resolution
2. X-ray tube rotation speed
3. Spatial resolution
B. Manifestations
1. Motion artifact
2. Stair-step artifact
3. Blooming artifact
4. Partial volume effect
5. Beam-hardening artifact
2) Novel techniques and approaches for artifact reduction in CCTA
1. Motion correction algorithm
2. Boundary correction algorithm
3. High-definition CT
4. Step-and-shoot scan technique
5. Monochromatic imaging
6. Material density imaging
3) The usefulness of these techniques and approaches for artifact reduction in CCTA
1. Improved image quality/image interpretability/diagnostic accuracy in CCTA
2. Efficient workflows of CCTA diagnosis
