• Review the anatomy and vascular supply of the pons
• Elucidate the clinical presentation and features of acquired diseases affecting the pons
• Illustruate and describe the features of pontine pathology on MRI
1. Review of pontine histology, structure, and function.
2. Discussion of the common and uncommon acquired diseases of the pons:
a. Neoplastic diseases: Fibrillary astrocytoma, primitive neuroectodermal tumors, pilocytic astrocytoma, glioblastoma
b. Inflammatory diseases: Multiple sclerosis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis.
c. Vascular disorders: Infarction, Locked In Syndrome, ischemia, PRES.
d. Traumatic Disorder: Diffuse axonal Injury
e. Toxic disorder: Osmotic demyelination syndrome.
f. Infection: Brainstem Encephalitis (HSV 1, West Nile, listeria), tuberculoma
g. Miscellaneous lesions: Radiation Necrosis
