1. Provide an overview of osseous and soft tissue injuries encountered in long-distance runners, which are not complicated by other recent trauma.
2. Describe clinical presentation and pertinent biomechanical factors associated with these conditions.
3. Illustrate characteristic radiographic and MR imaging features of these conditions in a systematic fashion.
Examples include:
Hip
Osseous: Acetabulum stress fracture, Femoral neck stress fracture
Soft tissue: Labral tear, Gluteus medius tendinopathy, Greater trochanter bursitis, Iliopsoas bursitis, Hamstring avulsion injury
Knee/Thigh
Osseous: Femur stress fracture, Tibia stress fracture
Soft tissue: IT band syndrome, Hamstring tendinopathy/tear, Chondromalacia patellae
Lower leg
Osseous: Medial tibial stress syndrome, Tibia stress fracture, Fibula stress fracture
Soft tissue: Chronic exertional compartment syndrome, Gastrocnemius strain
Ankle/Foot
Osseous: Stress fractures of calcaneus, navicular and metatarsal bones, Sesamoid stress injury
