- To understand the relevance of spine involvement in Axial Spondyloarthritis (SpA).
- Description of characteristic spinal MRI lesions in Axial SpA: Inflammatory and structural changes, with radiographic correlation.
- To discuss the role of MRI as a biological marker of disease activity: definition of positive MRI of the spine, and utility for monitoring.
I- IMAGING AND AXIAL SpA
A. Diagnostic Criteria of axial SpA
B. Spine involvement in Axial SpA
II- IMAGING OF THE SPINE IN AXIAL SpA
A.Spine MRI Protocol
B.Characteristic MRI findings with Plain film and CT correlation:
1. Inflammatory changes: Anterior and Posterior Spondylitis, Spondylodiscitis, Arthritis of facet joints, costovertebral joints, and costransverse joints, and Enthesitis of spinal ligaments.
2. Structural changes: Fatty depositions, Erosions, Syndesmophytes, and Ankylosis.
C. Differential Diagnosis
III- MRI AS A BIOLOGICAL MARKER OF DISEASE ACTIVITY
A. Definition of positive MRI of the Spine for inflammation (according to ASAS Working Group)
B. Monitoring: Disease activity and treatment response
