While cholecystitis is generally uncomplicated and straightforward, it may also present in advanced stages or other unusual forms.
In addition to directly obstructing the cystic or common duct, gallstones may indirectly obstruct the common duct (Mirizzi syndrome), stomach (Bouveret syndrome) or small bowel (gallstone ileus).
Postoperative complications after cholecystectomy include abscess and bile leak, and more rarely, cholecystitis of the cystic duct remnant and abscess due to dropped gallstones.
