The major teaching points of this exhibit are:
Exposure to ionizing radiation at radiotherapy and CT induces DNA damage. While human cells carry systems to repair damaged DNA, failed repairs lead to changes in the genetic information and their accumulation can induce carcinogenesis. Radiologists are cognizant of the risks of radiation exposure but few are aware of its biological consequences. Typically, low-dose radiation exposure from diagnostic procedures is monitored with physical approaches and phantom devices. However, these approaches do not reveal the actual level of radiation damage inside the body. . Attention has been drawn to biomarkers of radiation exposure such as chromosome aberrations and γ-H2AX; they may be able to serve as radiation dosimeters. We present the biological consequences of radiation exposure, review biomarkers of radiation exposure, and explain their significance.
1. DNA damage by low-dose radiation and its repair
2. Process of carcinogenesis induced by radiation
3. Biomarkers of radiation exposure
- Chromosome aberrations (dicentric chromosomes and ring chromosomes)
- γ-H2AX
4. Significance of biomarkers of radiation exposure
5. Risks of DNA damage by CT
