Review common pitfalls in the interpretation of adult male scrotal and pelvic sonograms:
1. Artifacts, normal anatomic structures and benign pathology may mimic bladder tumors.
2. Bladder and bowel tumors may mimic prostatic neoplasia.
3. Penile prosthesis reservoir can mimic pelvic cystic masses or fluid collections.
4. Not all testicular masses are cancer. 5. Not all serpiginous tubules in the scrotum are varicococeles.
Examples of the following pathology will be provided, but not limited to:
1. Cystic masses in male pelvis:
a. Penile prosthesis
b. Bladder diverticula
c. Urachal remnants
d. Complex fluid collections-hematoma, abscess, lymphocele
2. Mimickers of bladder tumors:
a. Reverberation echoes
b. Ureteral jets
c. Hematoma
d. Stent encrustation
e. Median lobe of prostate
f. Asymmetric bladder trabeculation
3. Mimickers of prostate tumors:
a. Bladder tumor
b. Rectal tumor
4. Benign testicular pathology:
a. Dilated rete testis
b. Epidermoid, other benign neoplasms
c. Hematoma, abscess
d. Testicular implant
5. Mimickers of varicocele:
a. Extratesticular dilation of tubules
b. Prominent arteries in setting of infection
