1. To review the various causes of acute abdominopelvic symptoms in recent postpartum females presenting emergently.
2. To demonstrate the imaging features of these causes for abdominopelvic pain and other symptoms.
3. To discuss the clinical management of the imaging diagnosis.
1. Review of the anatomy of the uterus and ovaries and their relative locations to other pelvic organs.
2. Case discussion based on presenting symptoms and preceding surgical and other clinical history. This includes patients presenting with pain, fever, leukocytosis, hypotension, and weakness in the setting of recent vaginal delivery and post-Cesarean delivery. Some examples are:
a. Postpartum hemorrhage
i. Pelvic hematoma after vaginal delivery
ii. Bladder flap hematoma after C-section
b. Pain/fever
i. Endometritis
ii. Retained products of conception
iii. Ovarian vein thrombosis/thrombophlebitis
iv. Pyelonephritis
v. Appendicitis
c. Iatrogenic complications from C-section
i. Rupture of a large leiomyoma
ii. Bladder injury
3. Emphasis on imaging findings, teaching points, and importance of imaging in diagnosis and subsequent clinical management.
4. Review of normal post-Cesarean sonographic appearance of the uterus to avoid pitfalls.
