1.To demonstrate diagnostic challenges including localization of the mass , extent of invasion and characterization of specific pathology such as liposarcoma , leiomyosarcoma ,extragonadal germ cell, paragangliomas and sarcoma etc.
2.To illustrate patterns of spread, tumor components, tumor vascularity helping in narrowing the differential diagnosis
Presentation will includes MRI characterization of retroperitoneal tumors using a dedicated less than 30 minute protocol of abdominopelvic MRI without and with contrast medium.
Imaging findings will be correlated with histopathology
Primary retroperitoneal (RP) tumors originating in the retroperitoneum but outside the major RP organs are uncommon. One of the challenges to radiologist is correct localization of the retroperitoneal lesions , characterization as well extent of the disease, involvement of adjacent structures, identifying the organ of origin.
Hence MR imaging is valuable in evaluating RP tumors particularly in staging, assessment of vascular invasion and fat content due its excellent soft tissue contrast. Specific diagnosis might be difficult to achieve because of overlapping features but certain clues will help in narrowing the differential diagnosis such as liposarcoma, leiomysarcoma, solitary fibrous tumor, paraganglioma and lymphoma etc.
