Pitfalls in Abdominal Duplex Sonography
Education Exhibits
Presented in 2014
David M. Paushter MD, Presenter: Advisory Panel, AIM Specialty Health
1. It is necessary to understand the basic principles of Doppler ultrasound that govern clinical applications to avoid errors and to recognize artifacts that suggest physiologic abnormalities and disease states
2. Doppler pitfalls arise from physical principles, technique including ultrasound unit operator selectable paramaters, scanning errors and misinterpretation
3. Doppler ultrasound is a powerful tool for understanding the nature of blood flow, and therefore indirectly the health of organs within the abdomen
1. Physical principles of Doppler ultrasound
2. Physical principles of duplex sonography, color Doppler and power Doppler
3. Operator selectable parameters that influence Doppler information: wall filter, gain, scale, baseline
4. Scanning errors: high PRF/aliasing recognition and correction, color "bleeding", measurement errors
5. Interpretive misconceptions: flow direction, aliasing vs. stenosis, flow in anechoic spaces, mirror artifact, visible bruit
4. Clinical examples of Doppler artifacts: Liver, kidneys, aortic branches
