Where’s the Mass?: Imaging Clues to Help Distinguish between Benign and Malignant Retroperitoneal Masses

Education Exhibits

Presented on November 30, 2014
Presented as part of GUS-SUA: Genitourinary/Uroradiology Sunday Poster Discussions

Participants

Jordan S. Gross MD, Presenter: Nothing to Disclose
Ryan Joseph Smith MD, Abstract Co-Author: Nothing to Disclose
Igor Goykhman DO, Abstract Co-Author: Nothing to Disclose

TEACHING POINTS

1. Develop a clear understanding of the anatomy of the retroperitoneum. 2. Provide an appropriate approach to imaging evaluation of retroperitoneal masses. 3. Demonstrate imaging features on different modalities (ultrasound, CT and MRI) that can allow the radiologist to determine the origin of a mass. 4. Review the imaging features of benign versus malignant masses. 5. Cover important pitfalls that radiologists should be aware of when evaluating masses in the retroperitoneum.

TABLE OF CONTENTS/OUTLINE

Anatomic Review of the Retroperitoneum Appropriate Imaging Evalution of Retroperitoneal Masses Determining the Site of Origin of Retroperitoneal Masses Differentiating Benign vs. Malignant Features to Consider: (1) Fat content, (2) Necrosis, (3) Cystic content, (4) Vascularity, (5) Margins, (6) Degree of invasion, (7) Clinical History / Prior studies Sample cases and mimics Future directions / Teaching Points / Summary
