TEACHING POINTS

Seizure disorders are common and 4-5% of individuals will experience at least one seizure in their lifetime, of which a fraction will suffer intractable epilepsy. In this subset, MR evaluation with dedicated seizure protocols can allow for detection of an epileptogenic cause in roughly 80% of cases. However, lesions are often subtle and may be missed if the radiologist does not know where to look. For this reason, a systemic approach in the evaluation of epilepsy must be utilized to adequately evaluate these patients. The purpose of this exhibit is to Review MR imaging protocol used in evaluation of patients with intractable epilepsy. Provide an anatomic organization for causes of intractable epilepsy for the practicing radiologist and trainee. A quiz will be provided at the end of the exhibit.
