1. To review a wide array of uncommon acute small bowel abnormalities in adults with characteristic imaging appearances, in quiz format. 2. To discuss the clinical and imaging manifestations of these entities, emphasizing on cross sectional imaging findings and differential diagnoses. 3. To discuss implications on management.
10 cases will be presented in quiz format with clinical history, images and question with four choices. Subsequently the correct answer will be provided. Discussion will focus on epidemiology, natural history, clinical and imaging manifestations, and prognosis. A large number of imaging examples will be provided from author’s own collection to enhance the learner’s experience. Cases will include very uncommon causes of small bowel obstruction due to uncommon internal hernias, bezoar and other intraluminal causes; distal intestinal obstructive syndrome in CF; primary small bowel volvulus; uncommon manifestation of small bowel ischemia; acute small bowel diverticulitis; perforation due to ingested foreign body; ascariasis; intramural hematoma in vasculitis.
Imaging in conjunction with clinical history can accurately diagnosis a wide spectrum of uncommon acute small bowel pathologies. Accurate and timely diagnosis of these entities has significant implications on management.
