Review the common causes of bowel obstruction in the upper gastrointestinal tract, small bowel, and large bowel.
Illustrate how obstruction at differing levels can appear similar across age groups when the etiologies are, in fact, different.
Create a deliberate differential diagnosis based on patient age from neonate to older adult.
Case-based comparison of the differential diagnosis for obstruction at differing sites across age groups including neonates, infants, toddlers, school-aged children, young adults, and older adults.
1. Upper Gastrointestinal tract:
Pediatric: Pyloric/duodenal stenosis, antral/duodenal web, duodenal atresia, malrotation, volvulus, annular pancreas
Adult: Tumor, ulcer disease, SMA syndrome
2. Small bowel:
Pediatric: Malrotation, small bowel atresia, meconium ileus, intussusception, Crohn disease
Adult: Adhesions, hernia, tumor, inflammatory bowel disease, gallstone ileus
3. Large bowel:
Pediatric: Hirschsprung disease, imperforate anus, colonic atresia, appendicitis
Adult: Diverticulitis, cancer, volvulus
