PURPOSE/AIM

The goals of this exhibit are 1. to present and discuss the technical challenges related to MRI-guided breast biopsy, and propose management tips for challenging situations, 2. to discuss radio-pathologic correlation and management recommendations for benign and high-risk breast lesions diagnosed after biopsy, and 3. to present algorithms to minimize the risk of false negatives.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

1. Technical challenges of MRI-guided breast biopsy: due to lesion position, to lesion size, to enhancement characteristics; 2. Management tips for challenging situations: vanishing lesion, missed lesions; 3. Radio-pathologic correlation examples, with management recommendations for benign and high-risk breast lesions diagnosed after biopsy; 4. False negatives: how to identify them, how to prevent them.

SUMMARY

MRI-guided breast biopsy is an essential tool of the breast imager, yet, a decade after its introduction, this technique remains challenging and imperfect. Challenges include technical considerations related to adequate lesion sampling, and difficulties in confirming radiologic-pathologic correlation for enhancing lesions. Through various clinical examples, this exhibit will offer practical tips for the radiologist, as well as propose evidence-based algorithms for the management of benign and high-risk lesions diagnosed after MRI-guided biopsy.
