Clinical Aspects of Computer-aided Detection (CADe) and Diagnosis (CADx)

Refresher/Informatics

Presented on November 28, 2012
Presented as part of RC521: New Trends in Breast CAD

Participants

Stamatia V. Destounis MD, Presenter: Investigator, Hologic, Inc Investigator, FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation Investigator, Koning Corporation

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1) The participant should have familiarity with the clinical relevance of Computer-aided Detection Systems available currently for Mammography. Our experience with CADetection in an outpatient Breast Imaging Center will be reviewed along with current clinical research and literature. 2) The benefits and limitations of the current systems will be reviewed, including the false positive marks, learning curve, increase in recall rate, additional investigation and work-up of false positive events, health care costs will also be discussed. 3) Goals and aspirations for the future with Clinical CADiagnosis systems for the clinical breast imager will be presented such as availability of temporal comparisons with prior and current year mammograms, teaching files, and probability of malignancy.

ABSTRACT

The presentation will include  the process of introducing a clinical CAD system in an outpatient free-standing facility. Initial experience including clinical research  involving CAD within an outpatient practice will be covered. Review of previously diagnosed cancers, evaluation of CAD marks of known cancers on standard mammographic views, and ongoing clinical collections of CAD marks in patients diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma Overview  of implementation of CAD with our current double reading practice. Discussion of the neeed for improvement in sensitivity and specificity of marks; necessary training for the radiologist about the validity of CAD marks, such as teaching files, probability of malignancy scores, ability of temporal comparisons.  Introduction of breast density software and new modalities such as digital tomosynthesis and the need for CAD.
