This exhibit aims to illustrate and discuss the main tropical and subtropical parasitic diseases affecting the chest and abdomen in pediatric patients. The imaging, clinical and pathological findings will be stressed, with emphasis in the discussion of sample cases.
The parasitic infections discussed include:
- Protozoa:Malaria, amebiasis, trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease)
- Nematodes:Ascariasis, Trichuriasis, Toxocariasis, Strongyloidiasis, Hydatidosis, Cysticercosis
- Trematodes: Schistosomiasis
- Tropical and subtropical parasitic diseases are very common worldwide and will probably become more frequent due to increasing globalization and changes in natural ecosystem and climate.
- As chest and abdomen are frequently involved, knowledge about chest parasitic diseases is crucial for their prompt recognition and appropriate treatment.
