PURPOSE/AIM

Discuss about patient's characteristics associated with bowel perforation in CT colonography

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

In literature are reported 28 cases of CTC-related colonic perforations. Combining the data of all patients perforated, we can find some common features that should be emphasised. We discuss about gender, clinical indication, age, whether optical colonoscophy was performed and how long before CTC, whether colon diseases are present (Active colon cancer, diverticular disease, hernia, bowel obstruction), istitutional experience, the site of perforation, distribution of gas, symptoms associated and treatment.

SUMMARY

First of all, none of the case of perforation from all studies, including case reports, resulted in patients death. The mean age of perforated patients is 74, ranging from 47 to 87 years. Only three patients (10%) underwent CTC for screening, and 25 (90%) because symptomatic. In Five patients (17%) colon distention was performed using CO2 automatic insufflator, in 22 patients (83%) was performed a manual insufflation. The mean institutional experience in CTC, in the centres involved, is about 1595 exams.
