The purpose of this educational exhibit is to review the etiology of bilomas and the role of radiology in its diagnosis and treatment.
A biloma is an extrabilliary collection of bile that can be intra or extahepatic. Bilomas result from injury to the biliary system, either as the result of trauma or iatrogenic, and rarely can develop spontaneously. Bilomas have been reported as a complication of biliary system surgeries or liver resections, or after multiple interventional radiology biliary procedures, like percutaneous cholangiogram, percutaneous biliary drainage, biliary stenting, transcatheter chemoembolization, among others. Radiology plays a key role in the diagnosis and further treatment of bilomas. Magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, ultrasound and scintigraphy are currently used for localization of bilomas and or biliary leaks. Large and/or symptomatic bilomas are usually treated with percutaneous drainage done by ultrasound or CT guidance.
Bilomas can occur as complications of biliary surgeries or procedures. Radiology plays a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of bilomas.
