Noninvasive image-based assessment and management of solitary pulmonary nodules are evolving given advances in multidetector CT imaging technology, knowledge adquired from lung cancer screening studies, and understanding of the behavior of lung adenocarcinoma. Strategies for evaluating and managing solid and subsolid pulmonary nodules take into consideration lesion size, morphology, and growth rate as well as patients risk factors for malignancy, including age, smoking history, and hsitory of neoplasia. Although subsolid nodules can exhibit indolent behavior, it is important to identify the subset of lesions associated with invasive adenocarcinoma and requiring a more aggressive imaging and managment approach.
