Childhood obesity is a multifactorial entity. The objective of this exhibit is to review the contribution of imaging in the medical work up and management of the different comorbidities and clinical complications encountered in the obese child.
1.Definition / Epidemiology. 2.Physiopathology: Endogenous versus exogenous obesity. 3. The comorbidities of childhood obesity: a- Imaging of gastrointestinal complications: liver imaging of fatty liver ( NAFLD / NASH), gastroesophageal reflux. b- Neuroimaging in pseudotumor cerebri. c- Orthopedic complications: Blount disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, flat foot, osteoarthritis( knee). d- Pulmonary complications: asthma, obstructive sleep apnea. e- Reproductive organs: polycystic ovarian syndrome. 4. Obesity and metabolic syndrome in survivors of childhood cancer. 5. Measurement of adiposity methods, DEXAbsorptiometry, CT and MRI (body fat, fat free mass, visceral fat). 6. Work up of an overweight child: clinical , laboratory endocrine assesment, bone age, pituitary MRI, ovarian US (polycystic ovarian syndrome), scrotal US ( Prader Willi, Laurence Moon Biedl). 7. Imaging assessment of bariatric surgery (gastric bypass, laparoscopic gastric banding).
Imaging can assist in the etiologic diagnosis and management of complications of childhood obesity , a contemporary prevalent entity.
