This exhibits aims to review the anatomy and embryology of the peritoneum. In additon, it will be described cases of primary and secondary peritoneum pathologies emphasising on surgical anatomy and differential diagnosis.
A brief discussion of the importance of correctly identifying and describing the peritoneal diseases is performed.
The embryologic and anatomic topics are presented with original animations and illustrations to make a didactic explanation of the development of the peritoneal cavities and ligaments. Magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) images demonstrate practical approaches of the most important locations in a surgical view.
Posteriorly, several pathologies, benign and malign, are presented illustrating several spectrums, differential diagnosis and ressecability criteria.
Diseases of the peritoneum are common in medical practice.
The dissemination through the peritoneal cavity is not random and the radiologist, with the knowledge of embryologic and anatomic peritoneal structures, may help the most appropriate surgical decision.
Being familiar to several patterns of peritoneal pathologies manifestations is crucial in order to narrow the differential diagnosis.
