1. Discussion of the embryogenesis and formation of the retroperitoneal compartments.
2. Review of retroperitoneal anatomy, including the different retroperitoneal spaces and their containing organs.
3. Demonstration of various pathologic processes in different retroperitoneal spaces.
1. Animated illustration of retroperitoneal embryogenesis, including rotation of the dorsal mesentery and fusion with the perirenal fascia.
2. Interactive review of the retroperitoneal spaces, their associated boundaries and contents.
3. Case-based cross-sectional imaging of retroperitoneal fluid collections and pathology.
Upon completion of this educational review, one should become familiar with the different retroperitoneal components. One should be able to recognize characteristics of anatomical distortion by retroperitoneal fluid collections and pathology, and localize them to specific spaces and organs.
