A pictorial review of CT images of complicated liver hydatid disease.
Liver hydatidosis (LHD) is a parasitic disease caused by E.Granulosus. In the past, LHD was restricted to endemic areas but nowadays has a worldwide distribution due to inmigration. So, continuing radiologic education is necessary not only for radiologists working in endemic areas but for young radiologists or for those that work in non-endemic areas.
We present a tranversal retrospective review of our experience with 64-MDCT in LHD complications.
Period: May 2007-May 2011. We have attended 88 patients with LHD. Fifty patients were operated on and 38 were only diagnosed and a close follow-up was made. A 64-MDCT was performed in each patient.
23 complicated cases were observed(26,1%): peritoneal dissemination(5 cases), severe vascular complication(3), liver hydatid abscess(2), transdiaphragmatic migration(1), biliobronchial fistula(1), cistobiliary communication(11 cases: 4 diagnosed by CT and 7 surgical diagnosis).
Near 25% cases of LHD present some kind of complication. CT accuracy for complication LHD was 65 %. Accuracy was lower for cistobiliary communication (36,3%), but 100% for the others complications.
Pictorial review would be useful for radiologists with reduced experience in LHD.
