BACKGROUND

The clinical report is an essential part of every imaging procedure. To effectively communicate the results of imaging procedures, the report must be accurate, easily understood, and appropriately thorough. The need to improve communication of medical imaging results is an imperative. Structured reporting includes the use of predefined formats and terms to create reports, and depends upon a consistent, universally understood vocabulary to assure that the report author’s concepts are communicated successfully. This presentation will demonstrate the online library of radiology report templates developed by the RSNA Reporting Committee.

CONCLUSION

This presentation demonstrates the current status of the RSNA Reporting Initiative, and gives users an opportunity to explore the online reporting template library.

DISCUSSION

The online report template library allows the free download of text-based and XML-based report templates. These templates are being made available both to the public and to reporting system vendors in order to promote the widespread use of RadLex®-encoded reporting templates. The mapping and linkages between ontologies allows for more thorough capture of the imaging specific and clinical entities that structured imaging reports describe.

EVALUATION

The primary goal of the RSNA Reporting Committee has been to create a library of radiology report templates. More than 140 templates have been submitted to date, both by committees of experts and directly from individuals. An easily navigable online reporting template library (www.radreport.org) has been developed. This library serves clinical radiologists as they adopt automated speech recognition and other reporting tools, and will enable the capture of imaging report information in a structured format to promote use of that information for clinical and translational research, data mining, practice management, medical education, and a host of other purposes. The terms in the library’s reporting templates are mapped to the RSNA RadLex® radiology lexicon as well as other robust ontologies such as SNOMED CT® and LOINC®.
