To pictorially review fractures of the adult foot and ankle that are frequently missed on radiographs.
Introduction: Scope and impact of missed foot and ankle fractures in the emergency department
Relevant anatomy
Clinical features, imaging findings and principles of management of easily missed fractures:
● Tibiotalar (e.g. lateral talar process)
● Calcaneal (e.g. anterior calcaneal process)
● Midfoot (e.g. cuboid avulsion)
● Forefoot (e.g. sesamoid fracture)
Checklists: blinds spots on foot and ankle radiographs
Conclusion
1. Knowledge of commonly missed fractures about the foot and ankle and their mechanisms can help radiologists identify fractures early and accurately, preventing unnecessary complications.
2. For each radiographic view presented, radiologists can follow provided brief checklists before signing off a report to ensure a commonly missed fracture has not been overlooked.
3. Follow up radiographs and cross sectional imaging can be used to confirm easily missed fractures.
