PURPOSE/AIM

 1. To review the biomechanics of hyperabduction trauma of the shoulder 2. To describe the various radiological findings associated with hyperabduction injury of the shoulder 3. To outline the roles of multidetector computed tomography (MD-CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in evaluating patients with hyperabduction shoulder injuries

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

 1. Review of the mechanism of hyperabduction shoulder injury 2. Imaging findings of the osseous injuries ranging from isolated greater tubercle fractures to avulsion fractures 3. Imaging findings of the soft tissue injuries: rotator cuff, labrum, and glenohumeral ligament injuries 4. Imaging findings of shoulder dislocation, including inferior or anterior dislocation

SUMMARY

Knowledge of the involved biomechanical factors provides a framework for understanding these injury patterns. Diagnostic imaging, especially multi-detector CT and MR imaging, plays a fundamental role in the assessment of patients with suspected hyperabduction injury. Therefore, familiarity with the spectrum of imaging finding of hyperabduction injury allows the radiologist to describe key findings that will ensure appropriate clinical management.
