To describe the CT features of cardiac paragangliomas and evaluate the role of multi-slice CT(MSCT) in diagnosis.
Between 2003 and 2009, five patients were pathologically diagnosed as cardiac paragangliomas. All of them were studied by multi-slice CT cardiac and coronary enhanced scan with three-dimensional reconstruction. The clinical data and CT images were retrospectively reviewed. The CT findings were assessed for tumor location, size, shape, enhancement characteristics, and feeding arteries.
Cardiac paragangliomas were ovoid shaped and significantly uneven enhanced. MSCT found 3 tumors located at the root of aorta, the other two close to atria, that according with surgery. The size of tumors measured by CT and pathology were similar. Compared with conventional coronary angiography, MSCT correctly depicted main feeding arteries of 4 tumors.
MSCT can provide useful detailed anatomic delineation, quantification and feeding arteries of cardiac paragangliomas.
