PURPOSE

To evaluate the value of IDEAL sequence in-phase or out-of-phase imaging in the assessment of lipid level in obese boys’ testes.

METHOD AND MATERIALS

43 subjects were involved in our study. There are 30 obese boys, the youngest is 7 years and the oldest is 15 years, and 13 control boys, the youngest is 7 years and the oldest is 16 years. All subjects were divided into two groups by age:≤10 years group and >10 years group. IDEAL sequence in-phase or out-of-phase imaging was applied in the study. The strength of fat signal relative to water signal (FSF) can be quantified by measuring the signal in testes on the in-phase and out-of-phase images. Height and weight were measured and body mass index (BMI) were calculated in all the subjects.

RESULTS

FSF of obese boys was stronger than control boys. FSF was correlated with BMI.

CONCLUSION

IDEAL sequence applied in MRI as a noninvasive imaging method for clinical assessment of fatty infiltration of the obese boy's testicles provides an objective evidence.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE/APPLICATION

IDEAL sequence may be used to determine lipid level of testes noninvasively and  to estimate the state of fertility in the future.
