The mnemonic FEGNOMASCHIC was popularised by Clyde Helms and it continues to be a popular mnemonic among the radiology residents. We aim to describe the lesions that are represented by the acronym FEGNOMASHIC, providing radiographic images and supportive text.
FEGNOMASCHIC is commonly used mnemonic for the differentiation of benign lytic bone lesions. It stands for,
F -Fibrous Dysplasia
E -Eosinophilic granuloma and Enchondroma
G -Giant cell tumour
N -Nonossifying fibroma
O -Osteoblastoma
M-Metastases and Myeloma
A -Aneurysmal bone cyst
S -Solitary bone cyst
H -Hyperparathyroidism (brown tumours)
I -Infection
FEGNOMASHIC can be shortened further using certain discriminators like age and number of lesions.
Benign, bubbly or lytic bone lesions are more common and pose a diagnostic challenge for radiologists due to a very long list of differential diagnoses. FEGNOMASHIC is a frequently used mnemonic which involves both common and rare conditions, and facilitates diagnostic accuracy in skeletal radiology.
