The advances in chemotherapeutic agents, specifically targeted therapies, and changing technologies in radiation oncology are improving the survival of patients with cancer. It is crucial for the radiologist to know the imaging appearance of the effects and complications of oncologic therapy in the chest.
First, a brief review of the newer chemotherapeutic agents and radiation therapies will be presented. The thoracic complications due to chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation and radiotherapy will then be discussed utilizing images from CT, PET/CT, and MRI. Examples include hemorrhage due to anti-angiogenic therapy, pneumonitis due to chemotherapy and vascular complications. Finally, tips for distinguishing tumor from post- therapeutic change will be provided.
The major objectives of this exhibit are to:
1. Review the new advances in oncology, with interest in chemotherapeutic agents.
2. Familiarize the viewer with the different complications of oncologic therapy in the thorax and the imaging appearance of complications on CT, MRI, and PET-CT.
3. Provide tips to allow the viewer to distinguish post-therapeutic appearance from recurrent or metastatic disease.
