BACKGROUND

The clinical report is an essential part of every imaging procedure. To effectively communicate results the report must be accurate, easily understood, and appropriately thorough. The need to improve communication of medical imaging results is an imperative. Structured reporting includes the use of predefined formats and terms to create reports, and depends upon a consistent, universally understood vocabulary. This assures that the concepts expressed by the report's author are communicated successfully. This presentation will describe the work to date on the RSNA Reporting Initiative.

EVALUATION

The primary goal of the RSNA Reporting Committee has been to create a library of radiology report templates. Over 100 templates have been developed to date. Current efforts have focused on developing an easily navigable online reporting template library. This online report template library will serve clinical radiologists as they adopt automated speech recognition and other reporting tools, and will enable the capture of imaging report information in a structured format to promote use of that information for clinical and translational research, data mining, practice management, medical education, and a host of other purposes. The terms in the Report Template library are mapped to terms in the RSNA RadLex® radiology lexicon as well as other robust ontologies such as the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT®) for clinical entities and Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC®) for laboratory and medication entities.

DISCUSSION

The online report template library allows the free download of text-based and XML-based report templates. This is being made available both to the public and for collaboration with reporting system vendors in order to promote the widespread use of RadLex® encoded reporting templates. The mapping and linkages between ontologies allows for more thorough capture of the imaging specific and clinical entities that structured imaging reports describe.

CONCLUSION

This presentation demonstrates the current status of the RSNA Reporting Initiative, giving users an opportunity to browse the online reporting template library.
