Pathology and anatomy demonstrated on dynamic imaging studies can be difficult to capture by storing static images alone, particularly in pediatric radiology. The use of ultrasound cine and stored fluoroscopic loops provides dynamic visual confirmation of the findings demonstrated during a study. Their use can also result in reduced radiation dose.
We present a series of cases where US cine/ fluoro loops added significant weight to conclusions drawn by the radiologist performing the study. Cases include demonstration of malrotation and aspiration on upper GI studies, normal urethral stream on MCUG, fluoro loops showing both air trapping due to inhaled foreign body and diaphragmatic motility, US of subluxability/reducibility of infant hips, continuity/course of tortuous duplex ureter and opening of pyloric canal outruling pyloric stenosis.
We have found the practice of storing US cine and fluoroscopic loops to be useful in pediatric imaging. They provide reproducible evidence of findings demonstrated on dynamic imaging studies which may be inadequately captured on static images alone. Furthermore, pathology which may be inadequately represented by a static image can be captured in a dynamic fluoroscopic loop negating the need to repeat maneuvers, thus decreasing the radiation dose.
