PURPOSE/AIM

Present cases in quiz format that demonstrate key MRI findings for rectal cancer treatment. Demonstrate high resolution 3T MR images that are useful in staging of rectal cancer.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

We will present cases in quiz format to demonstrate stages listed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer. As examples of the sub-classifications of T3 tumors defined in the Mercury trial are shown, we will discuss treatment decisions based on the sub-classifications. Cases will also illustrate mucinous tumors, vascular invasion, and nodal disease. We will emphasize improved identification capabilities with 3T MRI sequences, including 3mm thin section T2, DWI, and 3D T2.

SUMMARY

Recognition of rectal cancer characteristics improves diagnostic accuracy and helps in treatment planning. High resolution 3T MRI imaging for rectal cancer provides useful information that is otherwise unavailable or overlooked.
