PURPOSE/AIM

Review and further elucidate histopathophysiology, disease pathways, imaging appearances and diagnostic pitfalls related to mucinous rectal adenocarcinoma with the goal of improving oncologic outcomes.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

We will present diagnostic challenges associated with mucinous rectal adenocarcinoma, highlighting essential pre- and post-treatment information provided by MRI. Although mucin can be identified by MRI with high accuracy, a similar appearance may occur related to benign fluid collections, rectal implantation cysts, fistula in ano, colitis cystica profunda and necrotic tumors. Example cases will be presented to demonstrate certain pitfalls and to provide suggestions for avoiding misdiagnoses.

SUMMARY

Mucinous rectal adenocarcinoma tumor evaluation requires knowledge of certain disease features, imaging characteristics and assessment pitfalls to achieve improved diagnostic accuracy. Through the use of proper techniques, MRI of this tumor subset improves oncologic evaluation.
