PURPOSE/AIM

1) Provide animation videos of embryology of anomalies of gut rotation like Non-rotation, Mal-rotation and Reverse rotation, which is difficult to understand. 2) Picturise surgical technique for treating the complication of rotation anomalies, viz, midgut volvulus on video animation

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

A- Non-rotation: Only 90° anticlockwise rotation B- Mal-rotation: After 90 anticlockwise rotation, caecum returns to upper abdomen & close to duodenum. The midgut returns to right of SMA. Ladd’s band & short mesentery produce clockwise twisting of midgut around SMA and volvulus. Ladd’ treatment: 1. Un-doing of twist 2. Resection of band 3. Appendicectomy C- Reverse Rotation: After 90° anticlockwise rotation, the gut rotates 180° clockwise. Midgut is anterior & colon posterior to SMA.

SUMMARY

1. The viewer of this exhibit would precisely understand embryological aspects of anomalies of gut rotation. 2. This 5 minute video animation recording is done by a camera located inside the cord & watching the abnormal movements of bowel loops. 3. How a surgeon treats volvulus in an operation theatre is made simple & brought onto the monitor of a computer.
