1) To review the traditional response evaluation criteria for solid tumors (e.g RECIST),
2) To introduce the new concept of response evaluation of solid tumors based on our experience of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and colorectal metastasis (CRM)
3) To discuss its potential application in other solid tumors ie breast, HCC etc.
Size-based traditional response evaluation of solid tumors has limitations particularly with targeted agents. Newly proposed CT parameters based on changes in morphology and degree of enhancement in GIST and CRM have shown a significant correlation with pathologic response and progression free survival.
We review :
Traditional response criteria
New CT response criteria in GIST, CRM with pathological and clinical correlate
Potential application of new concept in RCC, HCC etc.
Newly proposed CT response criteria are simple and reproducible in assessing tumor response and show significant correlation with the clinical outcome. The potential application of this concept in other tumors such as breast, HCC, RCC and cholangiocarcinoma also shows significant promise.
