PURPOSE/AIM

1. Familiarize the reader with the use of quantitative ultrasound (QU) as a non-invasive tool to evaluate muscle disease. 2. Describe how QU measurements are acquired. 3. Discuss current applications of QU in assessing myopathies and neuropathies.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

A. Background on limitations of current tools in assessing neuromuscular disorders B. Pathophysiology of altered muscle echogenicity in neuromuscular disorders C. History of QU D. Principles of QU E. Method of acquiring measurements F. Review of QU findings in selected myopathies and neuropathies G. Applications

SUMMARY

QU can be an important assessment tool for muscle disease severity and radiologists should be familiar with this imaging test. This exhibit will review: a. The use of QU in assessing neuromuscular disorders b. The method of acquiring QU measurements and the principles behind QU c. Current and future applications of QU
