The purpose of this exhibit is to present common and uncommon diseases that can found in the anterior mediastinum.
Key differential diagnosis for common and uncommon diseases of the anterior mediastinum will be illustrated with radiographic, CT, MR, and PET studies. Normal anatomy of the anterior mediastinum will be reviewed. Cases of common diseases include: thyroid, various thymic tumors, teratoma/germ cell tumors, and lymphoma. Uncommon anterior diseases include: paraganglioma, parathyroid adenoma, leukemia, metastatic disease, infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and histoplasmosis, hematoma, lymphangioma, fibrosing sarcoidosis, thymic hyperplasia, and benign cysts.
The anterior mediastinum is an important anatomical space because it is a common site for many diseases. After reviewing this exhibit, the attendee will be able to:
1. Understand and describe normal anterior mediastinal anatomy.
2. Appreciate the role of different imaging modalities in the diagnosis of anterior mediastinal diseases.
3. Differentiate between common and uncommon diseases of the anterior mediastinum.
